Aside from the humongous tuition fees, room and board, food, transportation allowance and other expenses, another thing that you or your parents need to worry when you go to college are books.

You can never truly experience the feel of being a student pursuing a college degree without getting deep into those college textbooks.

As you go through your first and second year in college, you would have to deal with purchasing books in Algebra, Biology, Chemistry, Calculus, History, Humanities, Science and Social Sciences, the list goes on and on.

During your third year onwards, you need to get those thicker volumes for your major subjects like Accounting, Architecture, Engineering, Business and Finance, Computer Science, Education or Psychology. There are even more volumes that need to be purchased for those taking up law and medicine.

If you add the cost of your college books to the skyrocketing amount of your tuition fees and other expenses, you might feel as if you will not get over your debt with your student loan, or you will not get to finish your college degree with all the expenses that you would have to shoulder.

The solution is to look for a book of the same title. It can be new or used but one that you can purchase at a cheaper price.

Here are some great ways on how you can minimize your college books expenses:

1. Compare prices.

If you need a book for, say, Psychology, there are thousands of titles and authors to choose from. If your college professor is not particular with the author, there are cheaper books that come at a lower price which deals with exactly the same subject matter.

Try going from one bookstore to another, as they also offer different prices.

Some books have the same title but have different editions. For example, a fifth edition of an Engineering book which has five editions basically have the same content in all the other four lower editions.

If there is not much variation to the content, you can use the older edition, which should come at a cheaper price and it should be as good as the newer version which comes at a premium price.

2. Browse through the different web sites online to find the same book title at a lower price.

There are several web sites who cater to the needs of college students. They do the searching for you and help you look for textbooks, both old and new, which you can purchase at a lesser price.

3. Sell your old books.

If you have already gone through a subject and you do not need a particular book anymore, you can sell it or personally trade it with somebody in exchange of another book that you would need in the future.

4. Get back to the basics. Ask around.

Ask your friends if they have older brothers or sisters who can lend you the books that they used in college. Your neighbors who are now working probably have some textbooks stored somewhere. Ask them if you can buy the books at a discounted price, they might even give it to you for free.

The most important thing is to be resourceful. Your textbooks in will be your guide to help you through your college education and remember that you need to have them no matter what the cost because they are your investments for the future.

‘Winner’, Accountancy Age Awards for Excellence 2002.

Amazon.co.uk
There’s a refreshingly frank angle to Simply Books. The makers know that for most small businesses, doing the accounts is a necessary evil on a par with going to the dentist. So, they boast, not only will the package take half the time of its competitors to install, but it will be a whole lot easier to use–a bold claim when you’re battling excellent packages such as QuickBooks and Sage Accounting.

Bold but true. Not only is installation quick–about two minutes from feeding in the CD to starting to set up accounts–but it’s resolutely idiot proof. Hence instructions to “wait for the whirring sound to stop” and “press the big button”. The makers even provide a list of keyboard shortcuts to get you moving more quickly around the system.

Inputting information is made easy by the spreadsheet-style data entry pages–anyone who has used Microsoft Excel (or indeed an old-fashioned paper spreadsheet) will find the simple grid system easy to get to grips with. This also has the advantage of displaying all your previous entries, making it simple to find your place and input data direct from your cheque book, paying-in book or bank statement.

But just as important is what Simply Books leaves out. By designing the package around sole traders, the self employed and “very small businesses” they’ve stripped things to basics–for businesspeople who can spare a couple of hours a month keeping the books in a condition that will keep the VAT man happy. And with the reassurance of its accreditation by the Institute of Chartered Accountants, you know it will do just that. –John Rennie

My job was really getting to me. The same hectic morning commute followed by the same boring job in my same boring cubicle. Not to mention the same annoying boss, the same measly paycheck and the same lack of being promoted after five years with the same company.

Don’t get me wrong, being with the same company for that long has its advantages. I had job security, health insurance, sick days, a paid vacation, etc. But a large part of me wanted to break out of the box. To stop making money for someone else, and to start making it for myself. To be able to do something where I can use my ideas, instead of just passing them on to some manager who will either ignore or forget about them.

I have a friend who was in the same situation as me a few years back. She was tired of the corporate world, so she opened up a flower shop in the middle of town, and has done well with it. I wanted to do something like that, but I was just worried about the risk. I also didn’t have any great ideas, or any concept of how to get started.

So I jumped online and ordered two audio books on business. One of them dealt with all of the aspects of getting a business started -how to write a business plan, how and

where to apply for financing. The other dealt with small business ideas, how to choose one based on personality and your individual strengths and weaknesses.

After following the advice and using the information I obtained with both audio books,

I recently opened a franchise sandwich shop. So far, things are going great! It feels good to be your own boss and to instruct your employees on what to do instead of the other way around. My next purchase will be another audio book, on how to manage a small business!

Charles Mackay’s investment classic Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds will cost you around $10.00 and its over 150 years old but is simply a classic. If you see a vendor sell a system they claim can predict market tops or bottoms – or claims to be scientific this book will put you straight.

First published in 1841, shows that the madness and confusion of crowds knows no limits, when greed is involved and people succumb to the pack instinct.

He didn’t live to see the crash of 29 or 87 or the tech stock bubble – but these are no different to boom and bust scenarios which he looked at in his book. These are extraordinarily funny tales told in an entertaining fashion, of greed and naivete and stupidness.

Human nature never changes and just as in the boom and busts that Mackay describes investors is still doing them today. We simply cannot help succumbing to our emotions, especially when money is involved.

As Mackay says:

“Money, again, has often been a cause of the delusion of the multitudes. Sober nations have all at once become desperate gamblers, and risked almost their existence upon the turn of a piece of paper”

Books such as MacKay’s put into perspective how stupid traders are who think they can predict market behavior and that there is scientific law of human nature there isn’t and never has been.

This book covers three financial manias:

The Mississippi Madness the South Sea Bubble (from the early 1700’s) and the famous Dutch “tulip mania” of the 1600’s when tulips made gains in price that made them more expensive than gold!

“Nobles, citizens, farmers, mechanics, seamen, footmen, maid servants, even chimney sweeps and old clothes women dabbled in tulips.”

Why did people dabble in tulip speculation?

Because people bought them because they were rising in price they didn’t think that they had no real value and bid them up in a frenzied speculation until the inevitable turn

Mackay correctly points out – that when people get caught up in a crowd, they don’t stop to think logically greed rules and then its it’s too late:

“Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.”

The greatness of this book lies in the way Mackay shows just how illogical humans become when emotions come into play and he doesn’t just cover finance he witchcraft and fortune tellers and a whole host of other delusions

The book doesn’t tell you how to trade – but it shows just how bizarre and how illogical human nature is. For investors who think that you can predict human behavior in scientific terms this book will make them think.

If there is one thing we can be certain of humans are unpredictable when their emotional and their actions in the short term simply cannot be anticipated – day raders note this point you can’t predict what humans will do in a few hours!

I would have thought the logic of this book was common sense – but I meet and talk to forex traders all the time, who trade dumb theories (like day trading) and a load of other traders who believe in natural law such as the devotees by Gann, Elliot and Fibonacci.

There is no scientific theory of market behavior if there was we would all know the price in advance and their would be no market. Furthermore – if it’s a scientific theory, it should be objective and work all the time and of course none of the above do.

A book like Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds reminds us how stupid scientific theories are and how unpredictable humans are. The book maybe over 150 years old – but it is as relevant today, as it was back then. There is no difference between the emotions at work in dotcom mania and the tulip mania.

We like to think we have got more sophisticated but the same emotions rule the bulk of investors today just as they did 100 or 1,000 years ago.

If you want to trade you can but you need to understand trading is game of odds not of certainties and you need to separate yourself out from the madding herd and trade un emotionally.

I was listening to “America’s Success Coach”, Jack Canfield, recently and he told a story that reminded me of Bob Proctor’s “333 Story” from his international bestseller “You Were Born Rich”. In summary, the “333 Story” is a great example of what you can achieve when you make a firm decision and remain open to possibilities rather than focus on obstacles.

Jack Canfield recounted that while he was in Atlanta promoting his book, “Success Principles: How to get from where you are to where you want to be”, that he was interviewed by a woman who said his publisher had sent her two copies of his book. She read one and gave the second copy to her brother who had been unemployed for three years. He was depressed and refused to venture out.

Well three weeks later her brother had finished the book. He shaved, put on a suit and attended three job interviews. Just three days later he was offered a job. Just writing about this gives me goose bumps. Books indeed have the power to transform your life.

It was novelist, journalist and poet, Christopher Morley who said:

“When you give someone a book, you don’t give him just paper, ink,

and glue. You give him the possibility of a whole new life.”

This man had certainly been given a new lease on life when he was given the gift of “Success Principles”.

It can be argued that one book has single-handedly transformed the world of personal development. Someone gave a little green book to Lloyd Conant who spent an entire weekend reading and rereading its contents. On Monday morning he decided that he would build a world-class corporation and that is exactly what he did. Nightingale-Conant is a giant in the field of personal development. The company is recognised around the world for the quality of its training programs and all the leaders in the field of personal and business development, marketing and sales training, spiritual growth and wealth building aspire to have their resources distributed by Nightingale-Conant.

One evening, Lloyd Conant told Bob Proctor and Harold Gash, two of his “top lieutenants”, about the little green book. Proctor was just itching to discover the name of the book and more importantly what was written in the pages of this book that has had directed Lloyd Conant to his true purpose in life – to put the inspirational and educational recordings of Earl Nightingale in every home around the world. The book was “The Science of Getting Rich” and, though its text is outdated by our twenty-first century standards, it continues to fascinate and inspire a new army of transformational leaders.

Bob Proctor says of “The Science of Getting Rich” that:

“The contents of this book have served as the foundation for every personal development program I have written for the past quarter century.”

In fact, Bob Proctor used this book as the basis of his “Science of Getting Rich” seminar – a powerful seminar that has helped thousands of people across the world better understand, and apply with outstanding results, the process of wealth creation.

The little green book inspired Rhonda Byrne to create and produce the movie “The Secret” – a movie which I recently heard described as a blockbuster. That made me smile for this movie does not feature the likes of Bruce Willis, Halle Berry, Samuel L Jackson, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Matt Damon or George Clooney. There are no breath-taking action scenes, suspenseful car chases or even elaborate sets.

Instead, the movie features the likes of Bob Proctor, Loral Langemeier, Rev. Michael Beckwith, Jack Canfield, Lisa Nichols, Dr Joe Vitale and Bob Doyle among others. The film stars teachers, philosophers, finance experts, psychologists, physicists and authors. Bizarre, isn’t it? But when you understand the spirit in which this film was made it really is no surprise that it has been as successful as it has been and, more importantly, the power of this movie to transform lives across the globe.

“As you learn The Secret you will come to know how you can have, be or do anything you want. You will come to know who you really are. You will come to know the true magnificence that awaits you in life.”

Rhonda Byrne

I’m sure you can recall a book, perhaps even given to you by a friend or loved one, that made a significant impact on your life. I urge you therefore, to continuing reading inspirational books and to give someone you care about the gift of a great book.
